The Washington Examiner’s ARTS ON FOOT sponsored by Wines of Argentinareturns for the first time as a complete weekend affair on Saturday, September 10 from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm, and Sunday, September 11 from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. It’s free, fun, and filled with vibrant visual and performing arts offerings, and food galore …

Centered at 8th and F Streets in front of the Smithsonian American Art Museum(SAAM) and the National Portrait Gallery, this year’s arts festival will once again span four blocks and feature a juried fine Art Market with more than 100 artists selling their wares. Live entertainment will cover two stages, and the popular Cultural Corridors,supported by The Pink Line Project with hands-on activities offered by DC museums, galleries and theaters and the O Organics' Cooking As Art Pavilion, where acclaimed DC chefs demonstrate their culinary and artistic talents, will delight the masses.

Because this year marks the 10th anniversary of 9/11, several commemorative activities also are planned, including an interactive Arts as Healing workshop sponsored by the 9/11 Arts Project and CREATE Arts Center.

Not to be missed: the Restaurant Sampling Courts, replete with signature dishes from Cuba Libre (801 9th Street), Rosa Mexicano (575 7th Street), Luke’s Lobster (624 E Street), Matchbox (713 H Street), Oya Restaurant & Lounge (777 9th Street), Zaytinya (701 9th Street), and other top eateries. Food trucks join the fun on Sunday.

For the second consecutive year, the Shakespeare Theatre Company will invite area theaters and performance troupes to Sidney Harman Hall(610 F Street) to showcase their programs on Saturday. Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company (641 D Street), Ford’s Theatre (511 10th Street), and others will be present.

As you can see, there’s something for everyone, but it doesn’t end here. Other attractions include the pARTicipate areas, sponsored by The Washington Examiner, where the public comes together to create murals and other pieces; the Neighborhood Showcase, highlighting diverse fall programming at Penn Quarter and Downtown cultural venues; Alternative Arts, with surprise offerings and unconventional presentations; and theSafeway Wine Gallery, with tastings and seminars, located in the new Riot Act Comedy Theater (801 E Street).

The DowntownDC BID and the Pennsylvania Quarter Neighborhood Association produce this annual event, which kicks off the fall arts season. Both WAMU 88.5 and MIX 107.3 WRQX are proud media partners. Thought I'd take a break from my summer commission work to post some photos that have been lingering in my iPhone. Two pix show a project I recently finished at the offices of Texas Instruments in the beautiful Willard Hotel office building in downtown DC. We recently had them framed (I found a great & reasonable framer downtown for residential/commercial projects if you're interested) and they'll be delivered and hung any day.

The other pix show a few recent pieces not yet posted on my blog. Some I still have, others are gone - but many more are on the way. For the rest of the summer, I'll be splitting my time between my studio here in ultra-steamy DC and a temporary studio spot in Lewes, Delaware. I doubt I'll be at Eastern Market much, so feel free to contact me to see new works if you're in DC or near Rehoboth/Lewes Beach. I have many new pieces underway in preparation for my next art show - Arts on Foot - which takes place mid-September in Penn Quarter. Always a great show and I'll post more info about it as it nears. Come see me in July at my favorite show of the year! I'll have lots of new work available at this beautiful show in downtown Lewes, Delaware. It's just 15 minutes from Rehoboth Beach and 2.5hrs from Washington, DC. Feel free to contact me for more information and hope to see you there!

Hosted in charming, coastal Lewes, Delaware (“The First Town in the First State”) St. Peter's Art Show has been a summertime highlight at the Delaware beaches since 1966. The show occurs on the first Saturday of July each year, drawing 140 fine artists and fine craftspeople from the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond. Wonderful paintings and photographs, exquisite jewelry, masterful carvings, beautiful ceramics and mixed media creations and much more can be found the in the exhibitors’ booths that surround St. Peter’s Square. The artists and craftspeople also donate works to the show’s raffle and silent auction in order to raise even more funds for deserving charities!

All this set in Lewes’s quaint downtown, with an array of specialty shops and restaurants to boot! The event is free and open to the public, so come rain, come shine, come one, come all: It’s a must-attend event for the Cape region!

The recent works of Cherie Lester are inspired by her many years of study of architectural elements. These new abstract paintings are part of her continuing series of textural, mixed media, decollaged works on paper, wood and fabric. Comforting and strong, these pieces offer strength and solidity, with wisps of whimsy.

Emilie Keim works with urban landscape and row-homes of the neighborhoods around her.She is intrigued with painting close-up views of backyards and rooms. Honest paint on board and a blend of reality with abstract style makes her work impressionistic, and comforting. Her color selection is exquisite. This body of work documents the personal spaces, domestic life and privacy within her home city, Philadelphia.

My Recent Trip to Bilbao...

Recently, I fulfilled a dream I've had for the past 10+ years, by going to Bilbao, Spain to see the Museo Guggenheim de Bilbao designed by Frank Gehry. The building is, of course, amazing from all angles. Fantastic sculptures by Louise Bourgeois, Jeff Koons and Anish Kapoor can be found on the grounds of the museum. Great town, great art, and architecture!

On October 3rd, 2010 MPAartfest will transform McLean Central Park into a lively landscape of mini art galleries showcasing and offering for sale the work of a diverse group of 40 juried artists.

MPAartfest includes activities to captivate art-lovers of all ages. Stroll through the Children’s ArtWalk, sponsored by McLean Citizens Foundation, to experience the work of young artists from McLean area schools. Budding artists may create their own works of art at the Children’s ArtTent, coordinated by New Dominion Women's Club. The Gazebo Stage will feature a variety of live performances throughout the day. Visitors can treat themselves to a delicious selection of refreshments from local restaurants.

A rain-or-shine event, MPAartfest will move inside the McLean Community Center, adjacent to the park, in case of inclement weather. DC's MLK Memorial Library on a snowy Saturday afternoon. I've always been fond of, and strangely comforted by, the sight of this city's only structure designed by the late Chicago modernist architect, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

Over the years, I've borrowed many (heavy) art books, eclectic (shall we say...) music and back in the day - books on tape, from this large library standing at 9th & G Streets. While the library itself is in great need of improvements, it's good to know that in 2007, the District of Columbia Historic Preservation Review Board designated the library to be an official city landmark, protecting it against demolition.

ART BUZZ has grown to become our signature fundraising event for the DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative. The Collaborative ensures that underserved DC public school students benefit from the region’s rich array of arts amenities. They provide free transportation and free tickets to storytelling presentations, music, dance, and theater experiences; plus trips to The Kennedy Center and museums. In addition the Collaborative provides teachers with professional development sessions and study materials, adding further incentive to integrate the arts into their daily lessons. In the 2009 school year, more than 32,000 students and teachers will visit cultural institutions through our program. On October 4th, 2009 MPAartfest will transform McLean Central Park into a lively landscape of mini art galleries showcasing and offering for sale the work of a diverse group of 40 juried artists.

Budding artists may create their own works of art at the Children’s ArtTent, coordinated by New Dominion Women's Club. The Gazebo Stage will feature a variety of live performances throughout the day. Visitors can treat themselves to a delicious selection of refreshments from local restaurants.

McLean Central Park is located at the intersection of Dolley Madison Boulevard (Rte. 123) and Old Dominion Drive. Convenient satellite parking will be available at Cardinal Bank located at the intersection of Dolley Madison Boulevard (Rte.123) and Beverly Road. Overflow parking is available at 6862 Elm Street. I'm having sooo much fun working with recycled & re-purposed materials for mounting my collages, photographs and mixed media pieces. I've salvaged decorative wood substrate backings from old houses in Lewes and Washington - - and even from the old interior of Eastern Market on Capitol Hill. "I've been looking into the myths and legends of crows and ravens for my new exhibition happening in September. I want to create a new body of work based on the positive beliefs about these birds rather than the ominous. I'm looking into subject matter such as two crows seen on your wedding day signifies an auspicious marriage due to the fact that crows mate for life and are very loyal. Also how the cry of the raven sounds like the latin word for 'tomorrow' which is 'cras' and therefore the romans interpreted it as an expression of eternal hope."

My Favorite Thing About Washington, DC

.....the cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin. Quite possibly, I've never experienced anything more beautiful than being surrounded by the puffy little pale pink blossoms surrounding the Jefferson Memorial. I've enjoyed both early morning sunrise picnics and late evening champagne celebrations on the banks of the Tidal Basin during peak blossom week. I look forward to it every year and plan to walk down there (from Woodley Park) several times over the next week. If you go - don't drive, it's impossible. Take metro - or cab it as close as you can get and walk the rest.

Shown are my mini photoprints on wood - wood I've salvaged, cut, sanded and re-used as a substrate for the mini photos and collages. They are so fun to make and were a great project last November.

I'll be showing at the Downtown Holiday Market for 6 days in December. It's a fantastic, lively event in the (new) heart & hot spot of downtown DC in the Chinatown/Penn Quarter area. We'll be on F Street, NW between 7th and 9th Streets, directly across from one of my fav spots - Hotel Monaco. It's especially beautiful at night with lots of beautiful holiday lighting, hot beverages and live music. Last year, visitors to the Downtown Holiday Market were amazed by such a fantastic grouping of local artists and artisans and were reminded of previous visits to many outdoor European art markets. It's a great way to feel the spirit of the season.

I'll have lots of new work, including photoprints on wood, framed travel images and lots of new originals - paintings, collage and mixed media. Two entirely different kinds of work depending on what you are looking for.

I'm very happy to say that the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities purchased two of my collage pieces from the Art-O-Matic show. To say the least, it's very exciting to be adding my works to the wonderful collection of art owned by the District of Columbia.

On a similar note....stay tuned for upcoming info on a DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities 2009 Fellowship Applicants group show I'll be in. It will be held on July 16th at the Katzen Arts Center on the American University campus. It's free and open to the public. I'll be entering one piece - - which I haven't made yet! Better get busy........

Two Great Shows in Lewes, Delaware

I'll be in Lewes, Delaware for the first 2 Saturdays in July to participate in a couple of favorite shows - the St. Peter's Art Show and the Lewes Historical Society Craft Show. Both are held in downtown Lewes and take place on Saturday, July 5th (9am-4pm) and Saturday, July 12th (10am-4pm). Both are outdoors so participation is weather dependent.
